Editing techniques

Moving image started in 1879 using a camera called a zoopraxiscope and since then it has changed dramatically from the early stages of editing, because in the early of editing to make a cut they would physically cut the film in the place where they would want to cut to happen and then using clear tape to join the pieces together to recreate a cut. Where as in modern times you film the movie on film, and then you would put it onto computer software where you can do all the editing that is needed in the clip. The image to the left is a picture of a film editor physically cutting the film with scissors.

POV shot at 10-15 seconds, this is used to make us feel like we are the prisoner and the guards. This is good because it shows us the emotion that the person sas if we are the other person looking at them. It also makes the audience feel sorry as they are looking from the officers view as he is putting the handcuffs on, and also from the prisoners as they are putting them on as he knows he is about to be electricuted.

Reaction shot 40 seconds and at 3:56 seconds, this is used to see the face expression that the guard is pulling after he heard what the prisoner had to say. This gives a good opportunity for the adience to see the tears dripping from his face in sadness.

Establishing shot at 2:05 minutes, this is used to show where the audience are in the room so the people watching the movie know where everything is so they don't get confused. this is used in movies so that the target audience know where everything is placed in the room and in the next shot they will know where they are in proportion to the room and the people in the room.

Shot, reverse shot at 2:20 minutes, this is used so we can see who the audience member is talking to and who the prisoner is looking back at. It helps us to know who is in the conversation. this is used in movies to show when people are talking to each other, the camera will switch to the other people to see their reactions. this impacts the audience as it elps them to know which erson is talking and how they are reacting.

 Eye line match at 4-22 seconds, This is used so we can tell which characters are looking at each other. This also lets the audience see in this scene the emotion in the charecters as they are both looking at each other. this is due to the camera switching between the charecters.

The 180 degree rule has been kept all the way through the clip because the camera is either in front of the characters or to the left of the prison officer and the right to the prisoner. They also kept the prisoner on the left, and the officer on the right.

Close up shot at 5:11 minutes, this is a good shot to show emotion in the face expressions. This is a perfect shot to use at this moment because he had just been told he is going to die, so this shot will show the emotion in his face. This kind of shot is used in movies because it gives the audience the best view to see the sweat and tears dripping down his face.

Match cut on action shot at 4:14 minutes, this is used so we can see a person pulling something out, and then a closer shot we the audience can have a closer look because it it the main focus at the point. This is used so it seems that the audience is the erson on the camera, and that we are looking at what they are looking at. 

There is a lot of screen time for the main character, played by (Michael Clarke Duncan) because this ending clip is very important in the movie because this is the moment of his death. This scene is all about him, so this is why he is in this clip the most.

This final scene is very good for withholding information because we see the prison officers walking to to the prisoner, who is crying which shows us that something bad has or is going to happen but we don't know until later on when you see him being put into the electric chair. There are many different types of shots in this short clip for example they use over the shoulder shots a lot in this clip because the two main characters are speaking so we get to see the face expressions on the person listening to the person speaking.

There is a jump cut at 1:36 to give the impression of all the characters are walking down the green mile. Then it cuts to the crowd watching, then it shows the characters walking through the door. This gives the image of time has passed. This also has an impact on the audience as they know that he didnt kill the children, but when it changes o the family in the other room, it causes emotion as the family don't know that he is innocent.

This clip is missing some edits for example the clip does not have a cross cut, if i was to add a cross cut i would (if you know what the movie is you will understand this part) cut to a clip of the mouse Mr Jingles when he gets executed so we can see the mouse feeling the pain, then cut back to the person being executed. The sound track starts to happen at 3:33 minutes, this is used at this time because it is the time of the execution so there is a a sad and parallel to the clip because he is being killed in the electric chair so the music has to be sad but still peacefully to to suite his personality.
