Research Dossier
I have decided to enter my screenplay into the 2015 BlueCat Screenwriting Competition. I have chose this as they are one of the worlds leading places to submit screenplays for amateur. They specialise in giving unknown screenwriters the opportunity to show what they can do, and potentially get noticed. Here is the list of rules that I need to follow.
BBC writers room
The image below is of one page of screen text from the BBC program Remember Me. I got this text from the BBC writers room.
The video below is of a 10 minute short called the "Fallin' Floyd" It is about a man who has skills in playing the trumpet and he saves up enough money to buy a ring to propose to his girlfriend. But when he gets to her house he finds out that she is cheating on him with another man. This leads to the man getting depressed and not caring what he looks like. He chucks his trumpet that he loves in the river. Then this leads to him constantly drinking and not shaving. Eventually he goes to counselling. The counselled comes the conclusion that its the ring that he is holding on to is making him upset so he chucks it out of the window. This then leads the man to jump out the window after it leading to a chase scene where he ends up jumping into the river for it. But he comes out holding the trumpet that he chucked away. In the end he finds his love for the trumpet and he cleans himself up, he also at the very end gets a ice cream for a lady.
I have chose this 10 minute short as it resembles my short as it has a man who has a relationship, but in some way something leads then to fall into a deep depression and not loving life. But in the end they do something that changes everything and makes everything better and happier.
Audience
I believe that my primary target audience will be teenagers as the 10 minute short is very humerus. The 10 minute short is a comedy so it will appeal to the younger audience.
Theme and Location
The main location for the 10 minute short will be set in a fish and chip shop. Get the correct looking fish and chip shop is important for me as it has to be in a good location, but also the chip shop has to be a good size for all the fighting to happen, The other location we have to get is a open plan house. This is so we can see Keith watching TV, whilst Mary in the background in the kitchen.
The image below shows the scene heading
. This is so the people reading the script knows where and when the scene is set. So we know this is set by the seaside in Scarborough and is at dawn.
The image below shows us the character. This is the person who is going to be speaking at that moment.
The image below shows us the dialogue. The dialogue is the piece of text that a person is going to be speaking.
The images below shows the action of the text. This is used in screenwriting to describe wheat is going on in the scene, or to describe the location. This is used the most in screenwriting as it is a good way to describe detail.
Existing Media Texts
I went on to the BBC writer's page and went on to their existing scripts, and went on the script of the film "A Long Way Down" I was looking for inner, outer presence and context. The image below is outer presence as it is describing what she is doing.
The image below is of a piece of context from the script, this is context as it says where the character is. It says that he is outside the lift, and at the stairs.
Existing short films
The video below is of a short film called "Doubles". Its about a unhappy lonely man who has a crush on a fellow colleague at work, but he is too shy to ask her out. All of this gets interrupted as a mass out break of doubles. This is where every body's look alike start to show up randomly. He finds out that the girl he likes is seeing his manager. After an unfortunate event his manager kills his own double. This leaves the woman he likes her double to be unhappy and depressed as her boyfriend has died. So she joining his part of the department and he is told to make her feel better, so he takes her out for food. This leads them on to have more dates and eventually get together.
I liked this short as it resembles my 10 minute short as it is about a down beat unlikely man who in the end gets what he wants or does something good in my case. It is about someone doing what isn't expected. There is also some humour about it which changes it from a comedy to a romcom with a bit of sci fi in it as well. This makes it more appealing to all different age groups and sexes.

Here is a link to one of my other blog that has an example of inner and outer presence in it.

The picture below shows inner presence as it describes how Maureen is feeling By her smiling and her worrying she is being rude.

Having a large, overweight actor for the 10 minute short is a good way for the humorous side of the short. After doing some research and looking at famous actors that are overweight. It has shown me that many overweight actors such as John Candy, Kevin James and Oliver Hardy are mostly known for doing comedy movies.
The theme of the 10 minute short is a comedy, I chose this a the theme because even knowing it is about a male who is depressed and is in a terrible relation. All of this is looked over by the fight scene that happens half way through the short film. This is because the fight is made up of funny ways Keith could defeat the robbers, in such ways as fish slapping the face, vinegar in the eye and putting hands in the deep fat fryer. Along with the funny image side to the short it will also have funny dialogue with Keith using famous catch phrases from movies.

Existing Media Text
I found it really easy to find existing movies that have a similar story line to my short film. For a film to have a similar story line it has to have a underachieving person who has done nothing good in his life, but due to certain circumstances the become a hero by their actions. "Here Comes The Boom" is a good example to use as it is about a high school biology teacher who looks to become a successful mix-martial arts fighter in the effort to raise money to save the job of one of his fellow teachers.and defining all the odds he wins the fight and saves his friends job. This resembles my story as it has an overweight male who is usually knows for not doing anything useful. But when he changes his ways and takes on an apparent unbeatable task and overcomes it changes his life for good.

Another good example is the movie "Mall Cop". This is about an overweight male that was rejected by the NYPD due to his glaucoma, so he is a mall cop who has a pretty uneventful life protecting the mall from speeding pensioners on mobility scooters and women fighting over the last bra. But when it comes to black Friday the mall gets taken over by a gang he finds that it is his duty when he finds out that there are hostages. He ignores the police force and overcomes his fears of the hostages and his disadvantage of having glaucoma and defends the mall from the gang, becoming a hero.
Most of the movies that i looked at has a larger actor playing the role, I believe this is because people feel sorry for the people and are proud of them when they overcome the challenges.
