Part 1
For my Esting idea I play to create a stop motion video where I use claymation to create the E sting. In the Esting it is going to start with a clay model of a man picking a purple ball out from the floor and spins it around his body before shooting it at a wall where the white wall and purple ball come together to make the E4 logo.
The Esting can be set in any location, for example on a table or by the wall. I plan to film it in w 12 where i can film it in the corner on a table. There will be no background to the Esting apart from the wall.
It should be easy to make my Esting as it will not cost anything to make as I will be supplied with the clay, and i don't have to pay for fuel to get to a location, as it will be set in the college premises.
My Esting will be aimed at teenagers as it is an action scene of a man chucking a ball he gut from the ground and chucking it at the wall making it explode. I also aim to target this audience as it is E4's primary audience.
Part 3
I had to abide by certain rules when it came to creating the e-sting. E4 had set rules that you had to follow for the e-sting to be legible to be used. The rules are below.
The only rules we are forcing on you are…
We can’t show anything explicit or violent in the daytime, but we might be able to after the watershed as long as it’s broadcastable. So – within reason – your idea can be quite naughty / irreverent / provocative and the like. Use your common sense though; anything too grim or sexually explicit won’t get shown at all.
It HAS to be EXACTLY 10 seconds long. If it’s not 10 seconds long IT WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED BY THE JUDGES. Sorry, but we’re strict!
You HAVE to use one of the 10-second audio beds supplied. Download the audio beds to choose from here (.zip 13.5MB)
It HAS to have the E4 logo in it… but you probably could’ve guessed that. (Preferably, integrated into the idea rather than simply slapped on top of your piece at the end.) Here's an .eps version you can use (.eps 324KB)
We want you to take our logo and create an original brand sting that has smacks of E4 attitude and can be played out on our telly-channel. It can be live action; it can be animated; it can be 2D, 3D, or 4D; it can be hi-fi, lo-fi, big-budget or no-budget. You get the idea – we’re pretty flexible.
I didn't have to to pay for any of the equipment as the college had provided the clay for my model. I created the background by drawing them so i didn't have to pay. I had to make sure that I had no other brands in the video because that would have been copyright, and by the E4 rules this is not allowed.
We had originally planned that we would have 8 lessons of pre-production work, 8 lessons of filming and 8 lessons of editing, but my pre-production took longer than i had anticipated as drawing and coloring the backgrounds took longer than i thought it would. But it was OK as i was able to film the E-sting in just two lessons. This left me plenty of time to edit the E-sting as could as I could even adding effects to it. So even knowing i ran over time at the start with the pre-production work I caught up with my knowledge of using Premier Pro.
I kept to the required rules that E4 had set for the E-stings as I had no other brands in the E-sting that would get done for copyright. I made it out of clay and used stop motion animation. It had no offensive or violent actions in it so younger people wouldn't be offended and it could be shown all throughout the day. And finally the E-sting is perfectly 10 seconds which was very specific to follow their requirements
I got lots of feedback from many different resources, the first bit of feedback that I got back was from my mentors and peers. We watched all of our E-stings in class and got feedback from everyone in the class. Most of the positive comments said that they liked the idea of the E-sting, They liked the character, and they liked the how smooth the stop motion animation looked then the character brings the ball from the ground and started to spin it around his body. But there were some criticism, some of the comments where that they thought that the start was a little jumpy and that maybe a few more shots would have made it smoother. Secondly they would have liked to see more face expression from the character so we can connect with it. The second place I got my feedback from was that I set up a survey on Survey Monkey and got people to give me feedback. I got around 20 people who gave me feedback about my E-sting video. The results where mostly positive with most people saying that they thought that the animation was smooth in the middle part of the e-sting, and that they liked the look of the setting and the character. But some people said that the start of the animation was jumpy and not as smooth Here is the link to my survey Question. https://www.surveymonkey.com/home/?ut_source=header
I have learnt a lot of new skills by doing this project. The most important skill that I learnt is that you have to work to a brief and follow their exact rules for your product to be legible. My having to follow their rules it makes you change your ideas and how you’re going to film it so it is a good way to develop skills by following a brief. I also learnt how to do claymation. I have always liked watching claymation with movies such Wallace And Gromit and Shaun the sheep. I have always liked how smooth and creative they looked as they have had to take a picture, then move the model just slightly to make it smooth, and for them to do a whole movie it would have taken a very long time so when we got told we was doing stop motion animation was wanted to try it out and realized it was as hard as i thought it was. I learnt that it is very important for you to keep the camera in the exact location for the entire shooting and that the character has to be moved in very little movement because it you don't move it in little movements the character will jump around.I know there are little mistakes in my E-sting but I believe I could work in the media industry because I followed the brief to the exact requirements that they had set. And also I would love to have a role in claymation as i enjoyed to creating side of the animation by designing the sets and the characters. By having to work to a brief it develops skills that you need to be the best in this industry. I would love to do more animation in the future because it requires you to be more creative when planning the media project, and instead of just filming a project there are many different styles of animation that you can get into. I personally like clay animation but I would try other styles of animation.
Jamie,
ReplyDeleteThere is some nice personal reflection here but you have not added the questionnaire or added detail on the audience responses - this is needed.
To improve:
- check for lower case 'i's
- change the bit about location to the setting - not where you are filming
- add a 'flipping book' of your questionnaire questions and responses
- discuss the feedback with specific examples from your work, e.g., if someone said it was well-animated when the purple blob went around the body - print screen the bit where this happens in your video.
- generally discuss audiences responses in more detail and say how you feel about it
- print screen the ESting competition rules.
