Requirements for a moving image production
Types of moving images
- Our moving image production was a 90 second short film that we will be entering in a 90 second film competition called DepicT!.
We have also put the short film on Youtube for a bigger audience to see. There are many different moving media productions out there for example Feature films, Documentaries, Fictional films and long and short films. These are only used for films but there are many ways of seeing moving media images like TV programs, Radio, Music videos, Internet and TV adverts. Moving media images can be seen on DVDs, TV, Blue ray and in the cinema.

Finance and source of funding
- If you are making a big Hollywood budget film the best way for funding then are by getting sponsored from big Hollywood production companies like Warner bros and Disney. Or getting a well renowned producer like Megan Ellison who has worked on many film such as Lawless and Zero Dark Thirty or Robert Rodriguez who has worked on such film as Sin City and Planet Terror who helps with funding. But if you are on a low budget and don't have much money you can find many ways of funding like crowd funding, go to the bank and ask for a loan, hustle people for money or you could ask friends and family for money. But recently there has been new ways for new producers to get money and that is funding by the lottery, BFI- British film industry and creative England who give money that is funded to them and give it to potential young producers. Many Hollywood directors started off by financing their own movies for example the Coen brothers with their first film (Blood Simple in 1984)
Requirements for any productions?
- To make a good media film you have to have enough money to fund the many resources that are required for a good film. Props, equipment like cameras, tripods and costumes are expensive so it is cheaper to hire out. Locations, actors and catering needs to be provided for the cast and crew need to be payed for.
You need to get legal issues correct because if you have a well known item, object or name in the film you need to get clearance from the legal department of the product. You also need to get insurance to cover everything because if a person gets injured on scene and you are not insured you could find yourself with a law suit claim and end up paying out more money than you get.
In our DepicT! video we only had to require equipment like the camera and a tripod, Props we bought 3 eggs, 1 pair, 5 pound note, 1 pound coin and eggs which we bought ourselves. We had to get a location recce to give us permission to film in that location, and also the talent release so the talent
Personnel
A film is always needed to create a moving image production, but it varies for how much budget you have and what type of moving image production you are doing.
- For a low budget film you need, actors, director editor and some people who can lend you the money you need. such films as Rocky 1, Saw and The Breakfast Club. Rocky 1 million dollars and made a profit of over 225 million dollars. Where as Saw cost 1.2 million dollars and made 100 million dollars profit.
- For a television programme you need crew members like camera men, lighting staff, director, actors, set designer, writer and a producer. Most TV programmes cost between 100,000-500,000 dollars to make. TV actors make lots of money if they are in a long going TV series, for example Gary Sinise well know for his roles in many famous movies, but most famously for being the lead detective on the hit US TV show CSI New York where he made 200,00 dollars per episode
Time
When making a film you have to set yourself time and stand by then because if you don't it can lead to a chain of events going wrong costing you more money then you may gain. If you don't finish your film when you have a high budget it will lead to you having to pay for longer accommodation, more catering, pay the actors and even pay for the equipment if you hired it.
- Sadly we didn't make the deadline when filming our short film we had gone over date by about one lesson. We had 1 week to plan, 1 week to film and 1 week to edit, but we had over filmed due to having a half term in between filming and not having correct props.
Equipment and facilities
When making a moving image production it is much cheaper and easier to hire out equipment like cameras and tripods varying on the money you have to spend. You can also get a rate card which is a list of equipment hire prices which you can buy from a media facility company. There are many places where you can hire out to get cameras and equipment for example this website offer lots for a good price. http://www.londonvideocamerahire.co.uk/index.html
- When we was filming our DepicT film we didn't need much equipment but with the equipment we used we where able to get many different camera shots like tracking and pan shots with only a camera, tripod and a steadicam. We also had to have little props like a cup, dice, table, 5 pound note, 1 pound coin, 3 carrots, 1 pear, 4 cans of monster and 6 eggs.
Location
- Picking the right location is crucial because if you don't pick the right location you may have to pay money to get lights for the right effect where as if you pick a location with the right lighting it is easier and cheaper. In our DepicT film we chose to film in the filming room because it can be really dark in there, it also has the light which we used for an effect. When picking a location you need to keep in mind the logistical issues and risks they you can come across when filming. When we was filming we had to watch out of the wires for the lights on the floor so we didn't trip over, and the heat from the lights. Before filming you have to fill out a risk assessment form to ensure you know the risks and the hazards that can happen from them.
Materials
There are various types of materials you need when making a moving image production like Editing, sound track, costumes, visual and sound effects and props, for example eggs, carrots and other little objects that are visible. But make sure you get consent and permission to use certain objects because of copy right issues so contact the companies before filming so later on after the film has been published stages you don't get a complaint from the brands saying they are going to sew you.
Legal issues
Copyright is the biggest issue for any director when filming any objects because it you have a well know brand or even music in your movie you will have to get their consent and that can cost a lot of money, or if you don't tell them and they find out they can sew you for lots of money. For example if you want to sing the song (happy birthday) in your video you will have to get in contact with the legal department at the Warner bros studios. And if you wanted a certain car brand you will have to contact the head quarters unless they come to you and ask you if they can put their brand in your film.
- Clearance- you are allowed to do certain things in certain areas like you have been given permission to film in the supermarket.
- Public Liability Insurance- Cover from an injury to a member of the public or a crew member when out of the studios.
- completion guarantee/insurance- cover on equipment and everything in the filming area.
Regulation
OFCOM - Is the independent broadcasting regulator. They have many rules when it comes to TV for example because they have to obey the rules that they set like for religion, it must respect all reliefs. And for crime TV programmes you need to keep by the rules of not promoting for people to go out and commit a crime. OFCOM are set up all around the world to give every movie and TV correct rules and regulations. The link below is the broadcasting rules that are needed. http://stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/broadcasting/broadcast-codes/
BBFC/British Board of film classification - They clarify if a film is OK to be released and if not they tell you what you need to do to make it appropriate to be published. They are not set to make money they only plan to make enough money to cover their costs. BBFC are only based in the UK but give certificates for all films released here. The link below is the help page. http://www.bbfc.co.uk/about-bbfc
To broadcast a TV programme to the public you need to get it checked by the OFCOM because they are the company who tell the directors if the film if to Violent or if they need to change things in the movie due to it being inappropriateFor film you need to get it approved by BBFC because they are the organisation that give a film its age rating, They are needed because if they don't enforce the age limit, it would be inappropriate for a child to see a movie with inappropriate language or sexual content. You need to make sure if you are going to make a moving image film you go over it with BBFC and OFCOM so audiences know what type of movie is was going to be and if it would be appropriate.

Trade Unions and trade association
PACT and BECTU are 2 of the UK's biggest trade unions and trade association, they work on trying to help film companies and producers to get financial and support when making. They also help other visual filming like, film, Television, digital and theatre. There's companies are important are important because they help filming companies with legal rights and copy right

There are a couple of errors here - eg a rate card is simply a list of equipment hire prices which you can get from a media facilities company. 'Law sew' - you mean 'law suit'. OFCOM regulate broadcast media rather than film - that's the BBFC.
ReplyDeleteThis is a good pass and very nearly a merit - it needs a few more examples and some development in places, but it's not bad at all.
Sean
Now solid work just getting into merity range. Well done. It would need to be a lot more thorough with explanations and examples for a distinction - but it's solid work so well done.
