The purpose of a music video

The purpose of a music video

Music has been around for thousands of years, but the music video has only happened in the last century. Videos have gone with music since 1941 with lots of rock songs being released. and in 1969 a well known rock song "Easy Rider" was one of the first videos to have a dramatic video. But the official music video wasn't released until 1975, the song was "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen was revolutionary for its time with its video. It lead the way for the music video of today. To this day its still one of the most viewed videos online.

Music videos are one of the best ways for a band or artist to show who they really are and what they are about with a music video. The best way for a band or artist to do that is by having them self's in the video. This allows them to get their image out there so people can see. This also allows them to wear the type of clothing they like and objects in the video that they like. This shows the people watching what the band is all about. The image below is of the band "Mumford And Sons" from the picture you can tell that they are very influenced by old folk and country music by the instrument that they play, like the banjo and the harmonica. And the way they dress, like their old shirts and waistcoats. Music videos are also a good way for a director/filmmaker to get recognized. It's a good was for a unknown band to get recognized by getting a good filmmaker to come and make them a inventive music video that could get attention.

Producers have very different strategies when it comes to making a music video and releasing the music video due to weather or not they have lots of money. A major label band/artist has lots of money to spend on locations, props and special effects. where as a lower, independent band/artist has a very little budget so they have to be more creative with their videos and have to find ways to make the video the best with what they have got. The picture above showing Katy Perry in a high budget video with lots of special effects. When it comes to putting the music video out there it is very different between them as well because if you are a major label artist when you release the song your large fan base already know about it and watch it much easier to a independent artist where the best way for you video to get seen is by YouTube, Vevo or less well knows music stations. But the trouble with this is that there are many other different videos and songs on there as well, so for you to get seen is very slim. And you have the possibility of your song to get nicked, by not having any piracy protection on your song it isn't protected. There has been many different people that has found fame by making their own music videos, two of the most famous are Justin Bieber and Christina Grimmie, they became famous by posting videos of them self sat in a bedroom singing songs, they then upload these videos on YouTube and get recognition. The perks of making your own music videos is that it is much cheaper than hiring out staff and equipment, and also you can be more creative with your ideas. The disadvantages is that you have a very small budget to try and make your music video.

Music videos are a good way for a band to get recognition by fans by them expressing how they are as a band and what they like, A music video is some what another form of advertising. bands such as OK go found fame by their creative music videos where they do a creative dance routine on treadmill. Many of these creative music videos are mainly found on YouTube as it's a good way for videos to be seen and spread around.

Artists get a think called royalty when they release a song, royalty is when every time their song is played on the radio they get a small sum of money. This also happens if the artist brings out a music video to go with the sung, every time the video is played on TV or viewed the artist once again gets a sum of money. But no one ever knows how much money the artists get from their song and music video because there are so many different media sources where yo can view and listen to the song. They estimate how much money the artist makes from the song and the video by adding up all the income from all the singles that it has sold, how many downloads, and also how popular the song is. Once this is all added up the artist gets a royalty according to all of these facts. Mainstream artists like Beyonce and Rihanna get a much larger royalty, this is because they are more globally known and are played on the radio and TV much more than smaller independent artists, so for a independent artist to get royalty they have to rely on other media resources. The best way for a independent artist to make money is by making themselves known on the internet and to be original, this will attract a certain audience.

There are many different media outlets out there for you to get heard. The most popular and the ones that bring in the most income is having your song played on the radio, such as Radio 1 who are a good source for new artists, and Kiss who are more mainstream hip hop. You can also have your song played and viewed on the music channels on TV. There are many channels on the TV like Viva and 4Music. There are many different media outlets such as bringing out a CD. This is a good way to get income. Also less well known way is to bring out a DVD. A DVD usually consists of showing a live concert and backstage viewing. The link is to the Garth Brook home page where you can buy his 25 anniversary DVD. There are advantages and disadvantages of the growing number of media outlets out there. the advantages are that you have a greater chance of getting noticed with your song being spread around all over, this point also counts as a disadvantage because you are spread all over the place it could be hard for you to get noticed. Also with there being more media outlets and you being a independent artist there is a good chance of your song being copied as there isn't much stopping piracy.

A large part of the media industry is Synergy, synergy means the promotion of a company and their product through licensing deals. This means such companies like Walt Disney have given other companies  and firms the right to use their image and product. A good example of this is Walt Disney granted the rights of Mickey Mouse the certain products in return they give they a large sum of money for using their brand. Another example of this is "Guitar Hero Legends Of Rock" The legendary rock guitarist Slash allowed Sony to use his image in the video game "Guitar hero 3" Guitar Hero would have had to payed slash money to use his image. Micheal Jackson's song Thriller is one of the most famous uses of synergy in the media industry because the image of him as a zombie in the red, leather clothes is so recognizable. Having that image on your brand is a great way to get publicity for your product. The people who benefit from synergy marketing are the producers and creators of the image as they get money for every tie the product is used. But also the people buying the right benefit as they have a well known image associated with their product.

I believe that music videos are so popular because it creates something that sounds amazing into something that also looks amazing. It makes the song better. Back when music videos first came out it was something new and creative, that is why i think is is so popular now as it is still a relatively new concept. It also shows the creativity of the artists as most of the videos are what the artists choose, so this makes the audience relate to the artist as the video reflects their personality and their interests.

  1. Jamie,

You have made a great start here but you do need to add details and examples for self-produced artists and statement/message videos.

Artists also get things like royalties, not thinks!
