Music Track I looked at all different genres of music from hip hop to country, but I have chosen to do the song "Molly Drove Me Away" by The People The Poet. I have known about the song for a long time and i have always loved the song and the story behind it. The song has a fast up pace beat which would suggest that it is a happy uplifting song which it is but the narrative behind the story is the consequences of driving under the influence of drugs and partying hard. Its about the damage it can do to you and others. There is a really nice quote in the song that sums up the whole song, “You only get one life, so don’t go giving it away.”
The band consists of 4 members, Leon the lead singer, Lewis and Tyla the guitarists and Peter on drums. They are a soft rock band that have been heavily influenced on folk and rock bands like Deaf Havana, The Maine and Mumford And Sons. A video of the bands are shown below.
When I hear the song it makes me feel happier because the speed of the song and the beat makes it energetic. Even knowing the lyrics are sad the soft rock tone of his voice make it sound good. The song is fast paced straight from the start, and the song is approximately 3:58 long. Image And Representation The image and look for a band is very important as it is their hole image, a band/artist usually reflect the type of music that they sing. The People The Poet are a soft rock mixed with folk kind of band. Their clothing reflects this by them wearing a mixture of skinny jeans and shirts which are usually associated with rock music, but they follow the folk style of clothing by wearing old tweed wool waistcoats and blazers. This old style image is also reflected on the design of their album covers. As you can see from the image of one of their albums you can see that they have taken an old photograph from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. They era was around the same time most people would have worn tweed wool suits and shirts. They are not the kind of band that would wear makeup as there style is a old fashioned plain look, so they are meant to look a little messy and not clean shaven. This is why all of them have beards.
After looking at some of their existing videos it is very clear that they like to do pretty simple videos that fit with the song. The videos use lots of light monotone images and colors to give a nice ambient feel to the videos. In one of the videos they have used some old photos with the old flickering effect to show that they are old, this comes back to their old image of themselves. The locations that they film in are beautiful woodlands where the can get nice shots of the trees, but they also go into France in one of their videos where they get pictures of various landmarks. The narratives of most of their music videos are very influenced by the lyrics in the song. So for example one song is called "The Trip and the music video is them on tour in France doing various things around the city. Another song they did is called "Stability" and the video matches the song as it shows actual home footage of them at home when they where young. The narrative behind this song is them thanking their parents for their upbringing and that they are going to live the life the best they can. The two links below are to the two music videos i have described above. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8f-ZnWBciU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKZ5TNIa94A
A good style of music video is the "In Concert" and "As Live" footage. This is when a video has footage of the band playing live. This technique is used mostly in rock and country bands. But more recently in pop bends where they show them on tour meeting the fans and playing on stage. The video below is the song "Shameless by Garth Brooks and the video is of him singing the song at a gig in 1991. The videos are not just about the band singing live, its about changing the usual way of just lip syncing to the video
Another convention of a music video is to do a narrative and interpretive video. This is when the images in the video match the lyrics of the song. This is one of the most used types of music videos because it creates a good and interesting music video. But it also good for the audience to really feel the song as the lyrics are said through the video as well. A good example of this is the song "Give You Hell" by The All American Rejects. The song is all about two opposite neighbours that have opposite tastes, and they are both trying to make each other angry, so they try to do various things to do that. In the video we see this by then doing various things like playing their music really loud late at night and shining a light in the room early in the morning.
Another and more unusual style of music video is a Surrealist/ absurdity video. This style isn't used much in music videos because they can be very confusing to watch. They are videos that have very little to do with the lyrics and the story of the song. The video is usually just to get attention from the people watching as they are strange. A good example is the song "Hurricane" By Thirty Seconds To Mars. This video gained large publicity because the song is 13 minutes long and the video having a story that is hard to understand.
Impressionistic style of music video is a much more emotional and powerful style to use when doing a video. This style is mostly used on sad or emotional songs as the videos and lyrics are what the singer is feeling. I have chosen the song "Ghetto Gospel" by 2Pac and Elton John because the song was written by 2Pac was a outcry to end the war on the streets. This is because there was a lot of gang violence that lead to one of his close friend being killed.
Intertextual is a large area when it comes to music videos as there are many different styles in this area, you have Synergy, Allusion, Pastiche, parody and homage. Synergy are videos that have got the right to have another product in it, they often are songs that are used in a movie, so the video has clips of the movie in the music video. The link below is of the song "Footloose" by Kenny Loggins the music video consists of actual footage from the movie "Footloose". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltrMfT4Qz5Y Allusion videos make references to real life events, they often refer to people and events current and historic. The link below is of song "We Shall Be Free" by Garth Brooks. the video is all about world peace and used clips of old news stories on war and natural disasters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEyoZ4fdkdU
Pastiche is a style of music video where they likely make fun of an existing song or an artist. These videos mock an artist, but in a way that is light hearted and funny, but keeps some of the old video. The link below is of the song "Walk" by Foo Fighters, the song was heavily influenced by the 1993 film "falling Down". he lightly mocks a mans troubles on his journey. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PkcfQtibmU
Parody is a style of music videos that makes fun of a artist or a music video. This is similar to a pastiche but it makes fun of the video a little bit more. The most famous example of this is Weird Al Yankovic. He has done many covers of songs . The one I have chosen is his version of "Another one bites the bust" the "Another one rides the bus". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZkouut-9RQ Homage is when someone pays tribute to a person. these videos are often the artist paying their respects to a person through video. the link i have chosen is "Girls Chase Boys" by Ingrid Michaelson. the video plays homage to Robert Palmer's song "Simply Irresistible. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GBT37_yyzY
One of the must creative and most aesthetically pleasing music video styles is animation. There are many different style of animation, claymation, stop motion and computer/digital. the link below is of the song "Her Morning Elegance" By Oren Lavie, the video is done by using stop motion animation. It is cleverly shot by having a series of events happen on a bed.
Lip-synch is used in near enough every video where the artist appears in. Lip-synch is where the artist is required to mime along to the lyrics in the video so that it looks like they are singing it in the video even knowing they have pre-recorded the song in the recording studio. The video is of the song "I Really Like You" By Carly Rae Jepson. the song is song by a woman, but in the video they have the actor Tom Hanks to lip-synch along to the lyrics in the video.
Editing A good technique to making a good music video is by cutting to the beat. This is a technique where you change a shot at the exact time the beat happens on the song. The song below is of the song "Rolling In The Deep" by Adele. The shots change to the beat of the song.
Post-production effects is a great way to get people attention when it comes to your music video because when people see how much has gone in to a video to make it look as good as it can be is impressive and very modern. The effects that are used have to be suitable for the music so for example lots of explosions wouldn't work on a love song. The music video I have chosen for this is the music "Rock DJ" by Robbie Williams, the video uses visual effects to gradually turn Robbie into a skeleton going through a layer of the skin at a time.
Another clever editing technique is the Chroma Key, this is when a green or blue screen is placed in front or behind something, one you have done that you can project any image in to it making the person or the object look like they are in the location that is projected on to the green/blue screen. This style is usually used when you are trying to put something in a different location or object.. For example the video for "Parachute" by Charlie Simpson cleverly uses a green screen to project an image on to a piece of card in front of him showing the good side of his life where as he is in a bad stage of his life.
Split Screen is a very clever way to tell a story of somebody being happy and sad at the same time, or just polar opposites. Split screens work by have more than one shot on the screen at the same time. I found a really good example that uses this and its "All I Need" by Radiohead. The story is of two different boys from different classes, the story shows how good the life is of one child, and how bad the life is of another child.
I also found this example that isn't about good and bad but the way they have used split screen to make it look like one person is very clever and creative, it changes the video completely.
Every music video has camera movement in it, but some videos use pans, tracking shots, tilts and crab shots to make it look like the camera is moving with the person or the object. this makes the audience feel apart of the video. These styles are usually used in action packed and pacey videos. A good example is the song "This Is War by Thirty Second To Mars, the video is very action packed and has a lot of pan and tracking shots to show the pace of the video and to make you feel apart of the video.
different shot lengths and angles is a great way to change the feeling with the video because different shot lengths and angles show different emotions in a video, for example a shot that lasts long that gradually gets closer could mean that someone is sad so to have less shots mean that there is less rushing about and peace instead. The video below "How To Save A Life" by The Fray is a very sad and emotional song so they have used slow-motion and long shots to make the video feel emotional.
The Final style, convention and technique of a music video and the must important is the Mise-en-scene. The Mise-en-scene is the actual video itself, it counts for everything including the artists, sets/locations, props on set and the lighting. All of these things need to be taken in to consideration when it comes to the a music video as the music video needs to reflect what the song is talking about, weather its a happy song, sad song and even animation. Here are a couple of example that i believe the Mise-en-scene is very important for the song. First Here is an example from a sad powerful song. The song is "Earth Song" by Micheal Jackson, the song is very emotional talking about the world and how the human race is destroying it by poaching animals and cutting down trees. The Mise-en-scene shown actual footage of people who are effected by these events, also footage of deforestation happening. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAi3VTSdTxU
The second example is from a comedy song. The example I have chosen is Macklemore and Ryan Lewis's song "Thrift Shop" This song is strangely about a thrift shop and wouldn't really make any sense but with the video being as funny as it is, it makes the song very funny to watch. Also the shots used match what the words that he is singing. Humor is a good way to attract people to watch your video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QK8mJJJvaes
And my final example where the Mise-en-scene is important in a music video is "Hopeless Wonder" by Mumford And Sons. The song is about somebody trying to win over another person, so you would expect the video to be a romantic video where it shows the person trying to get the other person, but in this video it is in a way a pastiche video where it mocks most romantic music videos. It as used four world famous actors to act as the members of Mumford And Sons. The picture below shows two of the actors looking in to each others eyes romantically.
And in this shot they mock there own old style of clothing and look they are going for by the old fashioned dancing they do. And the way they dance is very comedic.
And finally in the picture below they mock old rock songs by they way they smash up their instruments on stage, so to go with the pastiche theme of the video they copy this by smashing up their instruments whilst crying.
I believe that this video is perfect for the song because most love song have the same kind of videos of two people falling in love with each other so for them to do this video in the way they have is very clever, and changes the song completely.
Music has been around for thousands of years, but the music video has only happened in the last century. Videos have gone with music since 1941 with lots of rock songs being released. and in 1969 a well known rock song "Easy Rider" was one of the first videos to have a dramatic video. But the official music video wasn't released until 1975, the song was "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen was revolutionary for its time with its video. It lead the way for the music video of today. To this day its still one of the most viewed videos online. Music videos are one of the best ways for a band or artist to show who they really are and what they are about with a music video. The best way for a band or artist to do that is by having them self's in the video. This allows them to get their image out there so people can see. This also allows them to wear the type of clothing they like and objects in the video that they like. This shows the people watching what the band is all about. The image below is of the band "Mumford And Sons" from the picture you can tell that they are very influenced by old folk and country music by the instrument that they play, like the banjo and the harmonica. And the way they dress, like their old shirts and waistcoats. Music videos are also a good way for a director/filmmaker to get recognized. It's a good was for a unknown band to get recognized by getting a good filmmaker to come and make them a inventive music video that could get attention.
Producers have very different strategies when it comes to making a music video and releasing the music video due to weather or not they have lots of money. A major label band/artist has lots of money to spend on locations, props and special effects. where as a lower, independent band/artist has a very little budget so they have to be more creative with their videos and have to find ways to make the video the best with what they have got. The picture above showing Katy Perry in a high budget video with lots of special effects. When it comes to putting the music video out there it is very different between them as well because if you are a major label artist when you release the song your large fan base already know about it and watch it much easier to a independent artist where the best way for you video to get seen is by YouTube, Vevo or less well knows music stations. But the trouble with this is that there are many other different videos and songs on there as well, so for you to get seen is very slim. And you have the possibility of your song to get nicked, by not having any piracy protection on your song it isn't protected. There has been many different people that has found fame by making their own music videos, two of the most famous are Justin Bieber and Christina Grimmie, they became famous by posting videos of them self sat in a bedroom singing songs, they then upload these videos on YouTube and get recognition. The perks of making your own music videos is that it is much cheaper than hiring out staff and equipment, and also you can be more creative with your ideas. The disadvantages is that you have a very small budget to try and make your music video. Music videos are a good way for a band to get recognition by fans by them expressing how they are as a band and what they like, A music video is some what another form of advertising. bands such as OK go found fame by their creative music videos where they do a creative dance routine on treadmill. Many of these creative music videos are mainly found on YouTube as it's a good way for videos to be seen and spread around.
Artists get a think called royalty when they release a song, royalty is when every time their song is played on the radio they get a small sum of money. This also happens if the artist brings out a music video to go with the sung, every time the video is played on TV or viewed the artist once again gets a sum of money. But no one ever knows how much money the artists get from their song and music video because there are so many different media sources where yo can view and listen to the song. They estimate how much money the artist makes from the song and the video by adding up all the income from all the singles that it has sold, how many downloads, and also how popular the song is. Once this is all added up the artist gets a royalty according to all of these facts. Mainstream artists like Beyonce and Rihanna get a much larger royalty, this is because they are more globally known and are played on the radio and TV much more than smaller independent artists, so for a independent artist to get royalty they have to rely on other media resources. The best way for a independent artist to make money is by making themselves known on the internet and to be original, this will attract a certain audience.
There are many different media outlets out there for you to get heard. The most popular and the ones that bring in the most income is having your song played on the radio, such as Radio 1 who are a good source for new artists, and Kiss who are more mainstream hip hop. You can also have your song played and viewed on the music channels on TV. There are many channels on the TV like Viva and 4Music. There are many different media outlets such as bringing out a CD. This is a good way to get income. Also less well known way is to bring out a DVD. A DVD usually consists of showing a live concert and backstage viewing. The link is to the Garth Brook home page where you can buy his 25 anniversary DVD. "https://www.garthbrooks.com/music/double-live/" There are advantages and disadvantages of the growing number of media outlets out there. the advantages are that you have a greater chance of getting noticed with your song being spread around all over, this point also counts as a disadvantage because you are spread all over the place it could be hard for you to get noticed. Also with there being more media outlets and you being a independent artist there is a good chance of your song being copied as there isn't much stopping piracy. A large part of the media industry is Synergy, synergy means the promotion of a company and their product through licensing deals. This means such companies like Walt Disney have given other companies and firms the right to use their image and product. A good example of this is Walt Disney granted the rights of Mickey Mouse the certain products in return they give they a large sum of money for using their brand. Another example of this is "Guitar Hero Legends Of Rock" The legendary rock guitarist Slash allowed Sony to use his image in the video game "Guitar hero 3" Guitar Hero would have had to payed slash money to use his image. Micheal Jackson's song Thriller is one of the most famous uses of synergy in the media industry because the image of him as a zombie in the red, leather clothes is so recognizable. Having that image on your brand is a great way to get publicity for your product. The people who benefit from synergy marketing are the producers and creators of the image as they get money for every tie the product is used. But also the people buying the right benefit as they have a well known image associated with their product. I believe that music videos are so popular because it creates something that sounds amazing into something that also looks amazing. It makes the song better. Back when music videos first came out it was something new and creative, that is why i think is is so popular now as it is still a relatively new concept. It also shows the creativity of the artists as most of the videos are what the artists choose, so this makes the audience relate to the artist as the video reflects their personality and their interests.
Planning At the start of the production we planned it so that we would split up the story into 3 sections so each member of the group had their own part to do. Luis had the first part, Ed had the second part and i had the final scenes. We all did our own part of the story board, 4-5 pages each. Once we had done the storyboard we all did parts of the pre-production. We got the location recce and releases for each of the locations early on when we found out where we would be filming. Filming It took us a bit longer to film than we would have liked. This is due to us not having a set location to film but there were some shots that we could do and that was the corridor scene in Great Yarmouth. we filmed there for two days, after the first day we found that our shots where too dark and blurry so on the second day we changed the IOS which gave us much better quality shots, we managed to get the whole of that scene done in the two hours of the second day. We then went to the location where we filmed the torture and escape scene. The filming of this went smoothly. We had to film at 7 o clock in the evening and didn't finish till 11 pm. We got all of the shots we needed, with plenty of spear shots as well.
The final location we filmed at was in Winterton where we filmed all of the outside scenes and the inside of the house. Due to one of the characters going on holiday on the Monday we only had the the Friday and the weekend before that to film all of the scenes with the creepy man in. During the week after that we got all of the other scenes inside and outside the house without the creepy man. Due to not being able to get to Winterton on the weekend Ed had to film a couple of the beginning street himself as the deadline for filming was approaching, and we needed to get them done as quick as we could. Editing Editing for our group was very easy as we had certain days between shooting where we could edit, so we was able to edit all throughout the time we was filming. By time we had got the last bit of filming done we had over half of the 10 minute short edited without music. All throughout the editing process every member of our group did their part of editing as it was important as every member had their part done to how they liked but with the clarification of the other members. But due to the late start of filming we where very close to the deadline, and trying to find the best music to go on the short film was hard as we had different scenes that needed certain soundtracks.
